How Does Your Garden Grow?

Since we're in the market for a house, the term "garden" has been used over and over and over.  One of our must-haves is a yard big enough to plant a vegetable garden in.  We're both overly excited of the prospects of being able to go out back to pick some herbs and veggies for dinner (which we realize will be far off, but it's still fun for us to envision) that we've taken the time to grow and care for.  But not only would I love to have a vegetable garden - I would love to have an abundance of plants and flowers growing everywhere!  The climate down there certainly is friendly enough for it.

Landscape artist Joseph Marek and his partner John Bernatz worked together to create this dreamy, small-scale garden in California ::

Roger Griffith's home a few hours outside of New York City offers an abundance of fruits, vegetables and flowers on his gorgeous property with a mountain view.  I'm totally saving both of these spaces as inspiration for us.  We've got a lot to learn but we are both 100% willing.

How many of you have gardens?  I know a lot of you do, which inspires me and gives me tons to look forward to.  I can't wait!

omg, i love the idea of having a veggie garden. when nick and i moved into our apt, we asked if we could take a small patch of land to garden, but then going through the book- it looked so confusing! good luck!

I have a veggie garden and am really excited for it this year! we even grew the plants from seed. we will put them in the ground this coming weekend or next! The chance of frost will be gone by then. :)

oh my goodness, total paradise!! i'm sooo envious of people who grow their own veggies. with my blackthumb, i'll never be able to run out into my garden to pick a few tomatoes - curses!

Brandi April 26, 2011 at 12:37 PM

I'm in an apartment in a big city right now, so no garden for me at the moment. But when I finally get a backyard, I'll have a splendid one. Until then, I can dream -- and these photos help with that.

oh wow, i would love an area like that!!

This is my year for veggies. I'm super excited. I'm actually in the process right now of sorting out how big I want my raised beds to be and how big my compost bins are going to be. It's so exciting.

These gardens have knocked me off my feet-swoon!

My parents have a large yard and what seems like an even bigger vegetable garden-during the spring and summer, we never buy produce (and we eat lots of canned or frozen veggies from our yard during the fall and winter)! I wish I'd gotten my mom's green thumb, but my guess is that if we're going to have a garden, it'll be all John's doing!

I wish I could garden but maybe I don't have the patience . I do love the joy of enjoying a beautiful yard/garden.

I would love to have a garden to grow my own veggies and herbs! Some of those gardens are just picturesque! xo

I really wish I had a garden. Some things are hard to come by in the city. Love these images.

I also dream of a glorious garden someday. Every time I buy a red pepper at $2.99 each I think about it even more!!

Sylvia April 26, 2011 at 6:23 PM

I love all these garden ideas! We just bought our house in October, and we are working on renovating the yard! Sounds like you have some exciting house prospects!

***My tip.... when house hunting, at least for us is, it's kind of like falling in love: when you know its right, you know it's right!

These are so beautiful! I wish I had access to a garden space - it seems like the most perfect spot to spend an afternoon in with a good book.

these photos are great - we are currently preparing to tear up our yard full of big square cement patio stones and trade them for a flagstone path and perennials. i am absolutely stoked at the idea and cannot wait. a veggie garden would also be amazing! be sure to post pics if you ever get around to yours & i'll do the same xo

i love the the pictures you posted. you will definitely have fun planting a garden. i know i love mine. we grow herbs year round and have several citrus trees. i am looking forward to our summer herb and heirloom tomato garden too...but right now our yard looks like hell...

M. Eileen April 26, 2011 at 8:27 PM

i love gardens. We are also looking for a house and a yard big enough for a garden!

Julie {love, julie} April 26, 2011 at 8:57 PM

This is a dream! I cannot wait to go house hunting for a house with room for everything green!!

Kimia Kline April 26, 2011 at 9:01 PM

yes to gardens!!! that was the number 1 reason we chose our current place--a giaaant flower garden in the back with a cherry and plum tree. makes waking up so magical.

Oh my I'm so jealous. I've been reading way too many interior design blogs lately. I've been dreaming of a big house with a garden, but here I am in San Francisco barely able to afford a studio apartment!! Oh the irony.

rachel April 26, 2011 at 11:44 PM

these photos are so perfect... I can't wait for the day when I can spend the afternoon tending to my own garden.

natasha {schue love} April 27, 2011 at 12:05 AM

I have a garden and I grow some vegetables in it. Every year I grow more and more, and it's always fun. Plus, the food is excellent!
I hope you can find the perfect garden for you two!

Beautiful pictures :) I have a 'veggie window sill' which isn't the best! A garden is high on my list of priorities too.

what perfect escapes these would be! we've been in our house for 1 year now and you'd think the front yard would have been our first priority but it wasn't...we really focused on getting the backyard looking good, planted a veggie garden, etc. so happy we did! i keep herbs in pots and it really is wonderful to pick your own basil, mint, etc. instead of overpaying for it at the store and then only using a little of it before it goes bad. so i wish you luck putting your perfect yard/garden together one day soon! xo

Love all of it! How did you make the ribbon driveway? What keeps the stones in place?
