Ad Astra Per Aspera

Today, January 29th, marks the day which my home state was admitted to the union.  Every year on this day I feel the need to celebrate all things Kansas.  I think that might stem from the fact that Kansas day was a really big deal in elementary school - we always had an assembly and spent the learning day celebrating the best of the state's history.  This day reminds me of many good times in my life, of good people I celebrated with who still remain my friends and of all the things that bring a smile to my face when I think about my 22 years in the sunflower state.

Even though the Jayhawks lost this weekend, and I can't come close to having a beer from the best brewery in the world, I'm still going to celebrate.  I will listen to this band (reminds me of my years in Lawrence), maybe try to hunt down a sunflower or two to brighten up our home and think about all of my friends and family back home.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday!

Kansas in Summer

I think I might be feeling a little homesick today, judging from my posts.  But you see, it's just that I can't quite get enough of this quilt!  I saw a tiny picture of it today on Etsy's Facebook page and instantly thought it looked like so many scenes across the great state of Kansas.

The quilt was made by Kansas City resident Kim Elchler-Messmer who has a slew of hand-dyed fabric quilts for sale in her Etsy shop, Kimem.  Go check them out and buy this one above for me!

There's NOTHING the matter with Kansas!

Last night, Rachel Maddow hosted The Rachel Maddow show live at Free State Brewery in Lawrence, KS.  First off, that is awesome.  Second off, I love the crap out of Free State Brewery.  Third off, Lawrence, KS rules.

"The next time that someone says 'what's the matter with Kansas?', I'm here to tell you NOTHING is the matter with Kansas." - Rachel Maddow

The episode covers the very controversial topic of abortion, but she sheds a light on it that everyone should listen to.  I'm so proud!  If you've got 13 minutes to spare, take a listen.

Ad Aspera Per Aspera

Happy Kansas Day, everybody.  In fact, happy 150th Kansas Day, everybody.  Now let's all go listen to Ad Aspera Per Aspera, buy some sunflowers and ignore the fact that Fred Phelps and Sen. Brownback are putting my home state to shame.
