Coyotes in Chicago

I ran across this article this morning on NPR and knew I had to share.  Did you have any idea that 60 wild coyotes were living in Chicago?!

In the video above, the coyote is running down State Street (which is where I'm headed in a few minutes to meet up with some old coworkers for lunch and to do some Badger-family Christmas shopping).  For those of you not familiar with State Street, it's downtown Chicago in "the loop" where so much is happening throughout the day.

According to the article, Chicago has over 60 coyotes roaming the streets freely, living in parks in neighborhoods throughout the city limits, eating rats and staying away from humans.  It baffles me that 60 coyotes are living within the city and nobody ever sees them.  It's really amazing actually.  Each of the coyotes have been placed with a collar that helps the county keep track of their whereabouts.  As you can see in the image below, most of them choose to live in green areas, hiding in the parks to refrain from human contact.

These guys are rarely seen, are afraid of dogs (even the tiniest ones) and usually keep well hidden.  But one of the funniest parts of this article is that one time, a coyote stumbled into a Quiznos downtown and climbed up in the refrigerated cooler!

I love his expression here!

When I first started reading I didn't know what to think.  But there is nothing to be afraid of.  These animals are fairly timid and don't pose a threat to the millions of people living in the same area.  It reminds me of Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer.  Have you read it?  If not, go to the library or bookstore and check it out at once! She fights for the freedom of the coyotes while everyone else sees them as a threat to their livestock or other animals and even to themselves.  Ranchers often poison them or shoot them for that reason, even though they have no interest in killing the animals like they think.

What do you think about this?  I'm pretty in love with the idea.

Coal Miner's Daughter

Today, I listened to this NPR Fresh Air interview with country legend, Loretta Lynn.  It's left me full of emotions.  Not only is she one of my all-time favorites but listening to her voice has left me missing my grandma like never before.  Hearing her say Warshington and git-tar makes me long for conversation with my grandma - her southern draw always cracked me up and hearing Loretta talk that way left me in stitches.

The interview is fantastic; learning about how she got started, what influenced her and how much her husband contributed to her career left me inspired.  I long to sing and I love country music and now all I want to do is queue up her music, blast it at full volume and sing my heart out.  Do you think my neighbors would mind?!

What a humble woman.  I loved hearing what the songs were about, her take on pregnancy and having so many kids (and losing a few along the way), being married at 13 and hearing her say, "I'm not famous, I'm just me".

Check out the tribute album, Coal Miners Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn, which was released on Tuesday, and be sure to listen to the interview.  I love her so much!

The song below is one of my all-time favorites and it holds a special place in my heart.  My husband and I goofily covered it awhile ago and had a lot of fun in the process.  After this interview and hearing the tribute album, I think I'll suggest to him that we cover more!

A good yarn

I love good yarns, those really great tales that lie behind the seemingly everyday. I love the idea of stories passed along in the form of spoken word, of documenting lives lived. If you do too, you should really check out this week's This American Life program, The House on Loon Lake.

That's all I'm going to say - enjoy!

New music

When I was listening to NPR yesterday, there was a story on a new band, The xx.

It's lovely mellow music. I'm a sucker for a boy and a girl singing together.

And when I checked out who they were online, I discovered they came from my neighborhood in London! OK, so they're from the high school that used to beat up my high school on the bus, but when you're this far from home, you'll take what you can get. Now I like them even more!

P.S. They have quite the cover version on their MySpace page, see if you can spot it...

Look at this!

I just had to post this NPR article because it's Halloween on Saturday and because this is just one hell of a medical mystery.

You can read the article here.  But take a look at this picture - it will surely get you to the article!

That's right, that's a GHOST in that man's BRAIN!
