Friday's Fancies + Have a Fun Weekend!

Warm & Fuzzy

sweater // button up top // leggings // boots // socks // hat

Happy Friday!!  I'm pleased as Mo Pie that the weekend is here and that I can kick up my feet in my softest sweatpants and stay warm and cozy inside.  It's a doozy out there, the temp is only 11 degrees at the moment.  So basically, our weekend plans don't involve much other than staying indoors.  It is superbowl weekend though, and we are having a small get together!  Plus we'll being rooting on the U of L Cardinals in person, just a few hours before the other big game.  Not too shabby of a weekend, if I do say so.  What do you have planned?

This week's Friday's Fancies revolves around après-ski outfits.  I'm not a big fan of skiing (hello, bad experiences resulting in injuries) but I am a big fan of being in the mountains, nestled in front of a cozy fire and sipping cocktails in cozy sweaters after a long day out in the cold.  Plus, with the weather here being so frigid, I was more than happy to oblige this week's theme.

Whatever you get up to this weekend, I hope you enjoy yourself and stay warm.  I know I'll be nursing my swollen feet and calves with my feet up in the air.  Oh goodie!

Thursday's Randoms

Seriously, how amazingly delicious does this cake look? I"m drooling! It looks like perfection in every bite.  I think I must add it to my list of cakes to bake.  Via Sweetapolita, where else?!

Love this print of woodland creatures from Etsy shop Chasing the Crayon.  I think it's easy to say that I'm just really into stuff like this, but I mean...how can you not be?!

I am totally itching to buy new sweaters, and J.Crew has a lovely selection right now.  I think everyone needs at least one new item per season and I have been a very good girl with our money lately. This honeysuckle one in particular is pretty great.  It's about time...right?

Many of you have experienced your first snows of the season recently.  While I am not at all jealous, I am getting slightly excited for what's to come.  Then again, I think back to that 2 feet of snow dumped on us in Chicago and I still shudder...Via

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we're already in the process of planning our menu.  I'm so so so excited to be able to host the holiday in our house and to have my parents drive all the way here for a week long stay!  It's going to be glorious, and I think for us vegetarians that there will be many dishes like the one above (broccolini and feta galette).  I can't wait!

I still can't stop thinking about this k.slademade clutch.  It looks a little monstrous in this picture but I think that makes it all the better.  I may not carry clutches too often but I would carry this all the time! I LOVE IT.

Why is it so hard to take photos of snow?  It never really looks like there is as much snow as there actually is and the color always sucks.  So you'll just have to take my word (plus the word of the news across the globe) that we got a s*** ton of snow in the last 24 hours.  I mean, whoa.  As of right now, 20.2 inches of the stuff is on the ground.  The wind is still blowing something fierce, the temps are dropping.  But at least the sideways snow has come to an end.  I tried to take pictures and video of the craziest winter storm I've ever seen from the time it began until this afternoon.

The wind really blew hard and snow started to collect on our kitchen window, but not the others.  I took this last night around 8 p.m.

The same window.

This was taken this morning.  Before the snow blower guy came along.

The view from our bedroom window.  Lovely view, right?  Right.

Our back porch!  I opened the back door, fearful that all the snow would fall in like it does when you open the car door.  But it stayed perfectly in place (thank heavens because it was halfway up the door!).  You can't even see the stairs!  It's like a waterfall of snow!

This is the side street that runs along Kedzie Blvd.  There's snow way any cars were getting out of there today.  We helped push a car a few streets down.  It's really not that smart of an idea to drive a 1992 Toyota Corolla around in this kind of weather, now is it?  There's really not that much snow on the cars because of the 60+ mph wind we had all night long.  It really was a snownado out there!  Thunder and lightning!

For approximately 16+ hours, Fullerton Avenue was completely covered with snow.  Unheard of!  A snow plow would come along every few hours, but as soon as it plowed any snow it was covered back up again in an instant.  I've never seen anything like this before.  Chicago is always super prepared for this, but even the most prepared couldn't handle the wrath of the 'MegaMonsterSnowmaggedonSnowpocalypseBlizzaster' of 2011.  The firemen were given snow mobiles to rescue cars.  Firetrucks have been blasting their sirens all night and all day long.  I read some stories of a few women who went into labor.   One hospital only had one surgeon who was mid-surgery when a woman desperately needed a C-section.  They had to send an emergency crew to get another surgeon for her because he was totally stuck.  I'm glad that wasn't Hadley!  Speaking of Hadley, she gets another snow day! 2 in a row!

We ventured out to play earlier, and to get beer from Walgreens.  So many people were out and about taking pictures.  We saw people snow shoeing, skiing, etc.  I made a snow angel.  We threw a few snowballs.  He took pictures of me standing next to snow drifts that were (nearly) the same height as myself.  While he took that picture, I was staring at some snow drifts that were even bigger in the parking lot of the Social Security building.  Honestly, it's fascinating.

I look like an Oompa Loompa in this picture.  I guess that's what 3 pairs of pants, 3 layers of tops and a big huge honkin' coat does for my figure.  But to make snow angels, one has to wear a lot of clothes!

I said that this is totally the kind of storm that you tell your grandkids about years down the road.  You don't even have to ham it up to impress them!  I mean, for the love of all things sacred...Lake Shore Drive was CLOSED, leaving hundreds of stranded drivers helpless ALL NIGHT LONG.  But honestly, don't drive along Lake Michigan during a blizzard with 60+ mph winds.  That's just crazy.

It feels so eerie here, but I like it.  That is, as long as my power stays on...

I hope everyone else out there is staying safe and warm!

Have a cozy weekend!

Friends, it's snowing here in Chicago, just in time for the weekend to begin.  I was out and about this afternoon wearing sunglasses and all of a sudden the skies turned gray and it began snowing.  It hasn't stopped since.  So that calls for snuggling and cozying up under warm blankets, right?  What are all of you up to this weekend?  Whatever it is, I hope your weekend is nothing short of wonderful!

Olympically inspired?

Impromptu skiing trip. Such fun! No longer afraid of lack of friction. Instead, confidently zig-zag down high mountain passes with wind in hair!

Snow, snow, more snow

Wow.  There is so much snow out there.  Seriously.  Yet here I am at work.  Boo!

We're supposed to get 14" of snow by tomorrow.  Holy donkeys!  Where I come from, 3" merits a snow day.  The  whole city of Wichita, KS practically shuts down.  Nobody knows how to drive, there's not good machinery to plow the streets in a timely manner and I think everybody just really kind of freaks out there.  My nieces and nephew have had more snow days this year than I can ever remember having.  Can you tell I'm just a tad bit jealous!?  I so badly wanted to stay home snuggled up with Badger & Gus and watch movies all day long.

Snow Weekend

This weekend we were at my in-law's house, enjoying the snow with pooches, movies in front of the fire, and lots of lovely chats with family over long delicious meals.

We built this snow-personage:

Marveled at the prettiness of ice and snow:

Just look at these 3 cute guys!

I'm a lucky so-and-so :-)

sNOw way!

Whilst I am snugly snowed in in Chicago, my English friends are also getting a rare but lovely snow experience. Here I am, with my coffee listening to BBC Radio 6 (which is awesome, by the way) and I noticed this great gallery of snow-folk.

Here's a snow chinchilla. He's literally chillin'.

This here is David Snowie.

I'm inspired :-)

Day Dreaming

Since we booked our upcoming trip yesterday, I've been doing nothing but day-dreaming of snowy cabins in the mountains and snow bunnies and my coziest sweaters and well the list goes on and on.

I love being able to do stuff like this.  I love that our wedding is actually kind of forcing us to go to California (nice job on our behalf I must say).

I can't wait to cozy up with my honey in front of a warm fire with my snuggliest sweater in tow.

Winter Wonderland

I woke up this morning quite surprised.  I didn't expect to look out the window and see this:

Ok, maybe it wasn't quite like that (I wish).  But it was surprising and made me a bit happy.

We set up our Christmas tree on Saturday.  I never knew my fiance was the kind of guy to get the biggest, bushiest tree there is.  It's well over 7-feet tall and it eats up our entire living room.  When we were deciding on the tree, I said, well Clark Griswald, I guess if you want it let's get it.

After the craft show last night, Inna gave me two boxes full of lights, ornaments and various other decorations.  So now that there's snow on the ground and a beautiful tree, I think I shall rush home after work, drink a warm alcoholic beverage, turn a Christmas movie on, start decorating more and get completely engrossed in the Christmas spirit.  Have any of you lovelies turned into Christmas geeks yet this season?
