Friday's Fancies + Have a Fun Weekend!

Warm & Fuzzy

sweater // button up top // leggings // boots // socks // hat

Happy Friday!!  I'm pleased as Mo Pie that the weekend is here and that I can kick up my feet in my softest sweatpants and stay warm and cozy inside.  It's a doozy out there, the temp is only 11 degrees at the moment.  So basically, our weekend plans don't involve much other than staying indoors.  It is superbowl weekend though, and we are having a small get together!  Plus we'll being rooting on the U of L Cardinals in person, just a few hours before the other big game.  Not too shabby of a weekend, if I do say so.  What do you have planned?

This week's Friday's Fancies revolves around après-ski outfits.  I'm not a big fan of skiing (hello, bad experiences resulting in injuries) but I am a big fan of being in the mountains, nestled in front of a cozy fire and sipping cocktails in cozy sweaters after a long day out in the cold.  Plus, with the weather here being so frigid, I was more than happy to oblige this week's theme.

Whatever you get up to this weekend, I hope you enjoy yourself and stay warm.  I know I'll be nursing my swollen feet and calves with my feet up in the air.  Oh goodie!

Thursday Loves

I thought I'd start today's post off with some serious cuteness.  These Teddy leggings from Mini Rodini are the cat's pajamas and any baby boy would look exceptionally adorable in them.

I just love this in its entirety.  I love Julia Child, I love to eat and I love the design.  Via

I can't get over how dreamy this porch is.  I bet it's nestled perfectly in the mountains somewhere and I bet this scene is straight out of fall when the rest of us are dreaming of crisp weather that calls for plaid blankets and fires.  Needless to say, I want to go to there.  Via

Lately, I've had a bit of an obsession with white, flowy blouses with lace or embroidered details.  And I saw this on Pinterest and really loved it, although I'm not fond of her pairing with army-print jeans.  It just seems so lovely and feminine in just the right ways.  Shirt via (now sold out), photo via

Considering it's the dead of winter and considering we have yet to figure out a good solution for our shoes in the entryway, I think this idea is brilliant.  We have an ugly tray for collecting wet boots, but this just takes it to a different level.  Not only does it look better but it functions better.  Genius!  Via

How are you all doing? Excited that Friday is tomorrow?!  Who am I kidding, of course you are!  I do hope your weeks have been going well.  Ours has been strange here in Louisville - 70 degrees one day, tornado warnings at 4 a.m. and it's freezing cold with snow on the ground today.  Trying my best to remain healthy and happy.  Happy Thursday, y'all!

Friday's Fancies + Have a Warm Weekend!

BLACK + WHITE

Happy Friday! Woo! What have you got planned for the glorious weekend ahead?  I'm pretty sure we have nothing solid planned for the weekend, which is most definitely fine by me.  Staying snuggled up and warm sounds like the perfect recipe for a perfect weekend.

This week's Friday's Fancies theme is...you guessed it...black + white.  I love this combo, as you might have been able to guess from this post.  If you look in my closet (and husband's, too) you would be able to find so much black + white stripes and pairings, it's not even funny.  I love how you can throw in a splash of any color for some fun and it just works so well.  And one of these days, I will own that Marc Jacobs handbag that I've been eyeing for like 7 years now.  Some day.

Whatever you get up to this weekend, I hope it's glorious.  Stay warm!

Thursday Loves + A Special Birthday

Need a blast of winter....fast?  These instant winter scenes from Etsy shop Kate's Cottage Shop will have you feeling cheery in no time.

I need some snow in my life, can you tell? Isn't this winter barn absolutely gorgeous?  Via

The perfect snuggly sweater to wear while visiting the wintery barn, above?  I do declare.  And I love the price tag - $32.74!  Via She Inside

This hallway feels so cozy and I really wish that I could copy it into my own home.  Sadly we do not have a hallway of these proportions so mimicking it is merely a pipe dream.  I guess I'll just continue to stare at its beauty while pretending it was all mine.  Via

Last but certainly not least, today is my husband's birthday.  He is most deserving of the best slice of life there is and I want to wish him a very happy birthday in every way I can think of.  He's pampered me to no end throughout this pregnancy (happy halfway mark to me on Sunday!), rubbed my feet every night, cooked me dinner, taken the pooch out most every time, let me have the remote when I've had enough football, bought me flowers and he never forgets to tell me I'm beautiful.  David, you're the absolute best.  Via

Friday's Fancies + Have a Merry Weekend!

That's So Mo

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5 // 6 // 7

Happy Friday!  I'm so happy for the weekend - it's been a long week.  Hubs was out of town but he's back now, so it's nice to have a companion to talk to again.  I've felt like the crazy cat (and dog) lady just talking to the pets non-stop like they actually care about what I'm saying.  Baby sure has been getting an earful of my neurosis these last few days too, so I'm especially sure it's glad that dad is back home.

What are you all up to this weekend?  We'll be getting our Christmas tree (hooray!) hopefully tomorrow.   I already have wrapped presents to put under it, too!  We're also going to see Jersey Boys thanks to my father-in-law.  Other than that, we'll see where it takes us.

Friday's Fancies this week is a true reflection of "me".  I practically wear this ensemble every day - just make a few changes, like really old Blowfish boots, maternity skinny jeans, a jacket from H&M, well, you get it.  But this really is my style to a t.  Tee?  Whatever.  What about you? What would your friends say is "so totally you?"

Whatever you get up to this weekend, I hope it's fantastic and full of merriment.  Until next week!

Whoa.  The baker inside of me is infatuated with these toys!  I haven't been baking too much lately (although that really should change) but these are the kinds of toys that make my eyes light up!  Via  Thanks for pinning, Krystal!

I love everything about this coat, mainly the color.  And funny enough, I bought a camel-colored coat from H&M this year that is so similar in looks, size and shape.  The price isn't so bad, either! Via

This image has been making the blog rounds but I really wanted to share it too.  I love how the sheepskin makes it look like snow at the bottom of the tree.  There's no way it would work well in my house with the dog and cat around though :) Via

Another step towards baby Badger's nursery is complete! Thanks to a sale which basically knocked off shipping, these Oh Deer - Retro decals are going up on the walls.  Everything is coming together a little faster than expected but it's so nice to have the decorations coming together early so we can focus on all the expensive items we have to have when it matters most.  Via

Erin of Reading My Tea Leaves put together a stocking stuffer gift guide roundup that is featured on Etsy today!  It features some of the coolest finds around, and I would love to have them all in my stocking come Christmas morning!

Hope you're all having a lovely week - and that you all had a lovely Thanksgiving.  We played host to some amazing friends, followed by a visit from my parents.  It was a great time and definitely left me in the Christmas spirit.  Happy almost Friday, friends!

Guest Post :: A Cozy Day

A Brief History of A Cozy Day
Spring may be near but there are still plenty of days left in winter to spend curled-up in front of the fire. Everyone has a favorite way to pass the time; maybe it's on your grandfather's leather recliner, in your partner's oversized sweater and with a particularly aromatic blend of tea. Whatever your preferred regime may be it's likely long established.
There are many elements that contribute to a successful day on the sofa, and though each of these elements has a place in your own personal history these items also have an interesting history of their own.

The Favorite Book
Down and out in Paris and London is a wonderful companion to a blustery day by the fire. Published in 1936, George Orwell's memoir chronicles his experience as destitute young artist living in Paris and London.
Born in India, Orwell moved to Paris in 1928 on his way back to England after having abandoned a career with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. While his family was of modest means and could have helped him, he chose to live life on his own and pursue writing, much to the dismay of his parents.
Writers often cite the first chapter of Down and Out as the chapter that taught them how to write descriptively. In it he gives a nuanced description of his hotel, neighborhood and the eccentric individuals with various storied backgrounds who live and struggle with him.

The Favorite Sweater
The favorite sweater is a staple of any successful cloudy day. An established favorite is the Aran Sweater. The Aran Islands are located off the West coast of Ireland. As fishermen and farmers, Aran islanders made their sweaters to hold up against the harsh maritime climate of the Atlantic. The sweaters are made with heavy wool, and according to the Aran Sweater Market, "can absorb 30% of its weight in water before feeling wet." Wool functions to draw moisture away from the body and out through the fabric so as to keep the wearer warm. Since it’s a natural fiber it doesn't cause the body to overheat while it protects from the elements.
The sweaters also have a special family meaning to them. Each pattern represents a different clan and their identity. Clan patterns are made up of a variety of stitches that represent different elements of Aran life. Some represent ropes, some seaweed and others wealth and success.
Feeling inquisitive? Pull out your own Aran sweater and spend some time trying to figure out what that your pattern means.

The Favorite Tea
The favorite tea is another essential component to a day inside. It warms you up from the inside when it's cold on the outside. Tea was introduced to the US in the 18th century after trade was established between China and the UK. Ever since coming to the US it's been a popular drink. Of course with the exception being the immediate aftermath of the Boston Tea Party.
While there are several different categories of tea, the two categories people are most familiar with are black and green. What most people don't know is that both types of tea come from the same plant, the Camellia sinensis (originally found in China and India), and are only altered during processing. There are many, many varieties of tea all different depending on location, soil quality, climate, altitude and processing. For example, Darjeeling is a black tea harvested in the Himalayas and has a musky quality to it. Earl Grey, on the other hand, is a blend of black tea that is favored with bergamot. But black and green are the two main ones.
Once leaves have been harvested they're taken to a factory to be processed. To make black tea, leaves are then left out so that moisture evaporates. After this stage, they leaves are broken up into different sized particles so that their natural chemicals can be released and mix with air. Particles are then left out for several hours to ferment and are then placed in hot air chambers where the pieces change color. Green tea is processed a little differently, rather than breaking up the withered leaves before they enter the hot air chambers, the leaves are left in tact.
If you're feeling creative try adding a few flavors from around the house. Lavender always makes a nice addition, especially when you mix it in with a bit of sugar.
So there you have it.  A little bit of history about a few of the items that, when mixed together, make for a perfect winter day, blissfully spent doing as little as possible.

Happy Tuesday, friends.  Hope you get to have a cozy day soon enough!

Thursday's Randoms

The mister and I have been in talks about the bathroom in our bedroom and how we will fix it up.  Right now it's pretty "meh".  The paint is not at all appealing to me, but it's been tolerable.   The countertops are perfectly fine and so is the shower, but it's not very tranquil and that is something I definitely long for.  Plus, it doesn't even begin to match our bedroom, as that was the first room we painted.  I would love to be able to recreate this bathroom - view included.  Although our view is pretty rad if I do say so.  It overlooks a meadow and many mornings I have looked out and watched groups of deer frolicking, with their fluffy white tails bobbing up and down.  I'm thinking we'll paint the walls the same shade of minty blue green as our bedroom and hang wainscot halfway up the walls.  We'll add some shelves and pops of red and voila, the perfect bathroom shall transpire!

Between taking care of Stevie, work and well, taking care of Stevie, there hasn't been much motivation to knit.  I've been trying to work on finishing up a last-minute Christmas gift (that obviously didn't really turn out to be a last-minute gift considering it's mid-January practically and it's no where near being done) and still have a lot to do, but when I'm done, I'm thinking this beautiful pattern is my next project.  The last hat I knit for myself was definitely a learning project.  It was completely unwearable even though it looked good over all.

How chic are these mittens?  I love the zipper and I love how warm they are making me feel.  They're on sale, too!

I purchased a bar of soap a few months ago from a boutique here in Louisville and I've been loving the way it feels and smells.  If you're in the Brooklyn area, check out Saipua - a family-owned soap and flower shop with amazing scents.  They're carefully handmade in the store and they have some pretty great packaging too, might I add.  If you're not in Brooklyn, the soaps are sold across the US!  I have the gardener's soap and I love it, but I really wish I could wash my hands with the coffee mint right about now!

So many of us are experiencing winter today - finally.  Since I have the day off, I'm thinking that curling up by the window with a book is the best idea.

Happy Thursday, everyone! What's inspiring you today?

I'm dreaming about soft winter pastels for my wardrobe lately.  To me, these colors are quintessential January.  Even though it doesn't quite feel like January outside, I'm aching for the weather to satisfy my mood.  Also, the walls of my home are aching for this print, seriously.

What is in your January wardrobe these days?

These awesome coats are the only thing making me anxious for winter.  Well, that and maybe Christmas.  I'm always a sucker for EmersonMade coats (I'm still dreaming of winning a spree) and I think it's rather apparent that I'm a sucker for a certain kind of coat these days.  I'd feel so chic wearing any of these - it would certainly take the edge off the coldness, am I right?

Dreaming in color :: In Rainbows

This whole country is currently too cold.  For the last 3 days, the temps have been single digits with wind chills way below zero in Chicago and practically all of the midwest.  It's not cool to be this cold, winter!  You're just being cruel!

Similar to dreaming in peach, today I'm dreaming in rainbows.  After spotting this woman's coat, I new I needed more.  The sun is shining out there, it has been for the last few days.  But it doesn't make up for the brutal cold.  So take a moment to enjoy these colorful images today because if you live in the cold like me you likely won't be seeing/experiencing any real rainbows any time soon.

And just to keep you laughing...

Have a warm weekend!

Just imagine a land far, far away where the sun is shining, the air is warm and you are wearing sneakers with your pants rolled up.  That's what I'm going to be thinking this weekend.  I'm going to transport myself to this dream land where it's 75 degrees instead of 2.

I'm also ready to Bear down!  That's right, us Badgers are pretty big fans of Daaa Bears and we're ready to watch and root for them to make it to the Superbowl!  Other than that, our weekend is pretty relaxed.  I imagine there will be lots of us time together at home, wishing we had a fireplace to keep us toasty.

I don't know about you but I'm pretty much ready for summer.

Have a great weekend everyone!  Stay warm!

Olympically inspired?

Impromptu skiing trip. Such fun! No longer afraid of lack of friction. Instead, confidently zig-zag down high mountain passes with wind in hair!

Punxsutawni Phil, you've really let me down

Just like that, six more weeks of winter.  Noooooooooo!  Ok maybe it will be mild.  Maybe I shouldn't buy into what this little guy says but...I'm so ready for spring!!!  But wait, who am I kidding, I live in Chicago where there is no spring!  Woe is me...I guess I need to go home tonight and watch this movie to lift my spirits!

Snow Weekend

This weekend we were at my in-law's house, enjoying the snow with pooches, movies in front of the fire, and lots of lovely chats with family over long delicious meals.

We built this snow-personage:

Marveled at the prettiness of ice and snow:

Just look at these 3 cute guys!

I'm a lucky so-and-so :-)

sNOw way!

Whilst I am snugly snowed in in Chicago, my English friends are also getting a rare but lovely snow experience. Here I am, with my coffee listening to BBC Radio 6 (which is awesome, by the way) and I noticed this great gallery of snow-folk.

Here's a snow chinchilla. He's literally chillin'.

This here is David Snowie.

Winter Wonderland

I woke up this morning quite surprised.  I didn't expect to look out the window and see this:

Ok, maybe it wasn't quite like that (I wish).  But it was surprising and made me a bit happy.

We set up our Christmas tree on Saturday.  I never knew my fiance was the kind of guy to get the biggest, bushiest tree there is.  It's well over 7-feet tall and it eats up our entire living room.  When we were deciding on the tree, I said, well Clark Griswald, I guess if you want it let's get it.

After the craft show last night, Inna gave me two boxes full of lights, ornaments and various other decorations.  So now that there's snow on the ground and a beautiful tree, I think I shall rush home after work, drink a warm alcoholic beverage, turn a Christmas movie on, start decorating more and get completely engrossed in the Christmas spirit.  Have any of you lovelies turned into Christmas geeks yet this season?
