Around the World

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Now that we're mostly unpacked*, we're diving head first into the decorating process.  For me, it's not quite as fun as it might be for the rest of you, but that's because I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself to make this house look as best as it can.  But I digress.

One of my favorite things we bought for our walls when we moved into our last apartment was a $10 map of the USA which hung up on a wall in the hallway (that you could see when you came in the front door).  So many people would stare at that map - there are so many awesome things you can discover!  For my birthday, one of my presents from the mister was a world map! We've yet to hang it, but I can't wait to reawaken my geographical knowledge of the world and stare at it for hours upon hours.

Maps have always held a special place in my heart - as I'm sure they do for many of you.  My stepdad is a geologist and he's always had maps up everywhere.  His office is wallpapered in them and it is purely awesome.  I worked for him one summer, and spent a lot of time mapping things out for him.  It was honestly one of the most enjoyable summers of my life.  My stepdad is a pretty awesome guy, in case you wondered.  And I know you did.

If we could, we might decorate our entire house in maps - especially maps as pretty as the ones above.  I love cartography and am endlessly fascinated with it, as you might be able to tell....

* I say mostly, because, while there are still boxes, there is mainly a bunch of stuff scattered about with no home...so that doesn't really count as unpacked, does it?

Right there with ya. We love maps. Have several framed in our house. My fav's are a set of 4 vintage maps that were a school project where they cut things out, like the states industries and such, and pasted them into the right states. They were a housewarming gift and I treasure them.

This is a beautiful post of map inspiration! My parents had maps hanging in most of the rooms in our house when I was a kid...And no pressure about decorating, I totally understand about having miscellaneous items with no homes...

I love maps. I really want to got an old super inaccurate wall map and put it up in our living room. The pull down kind that we used to have in school.

I have an old globe from my great grandpa- that I don't think I could ever get rid of. i think having a map makes your feel like an explorer of some sort.

I think a wall plastered with maps with look awesome, maybe in a small bathroom...I know you didnt ask about decorating a small bathroom but thats where my brain went.

Anya Z August 17, 2011 at 3:57 PM

I used to have a map shower curtain and my old toilet only bathroom was collaged in city maps. Helped me learn my way around when I first moved to SF :) I guess I like maps too...

I love maps-I think it's something I learned from my parents! They have great antique maps of regions they love, namely Latin America, all over our house!

Johanna August 17, 2011 at 5:51 PM

Maps really are the coolest. I think I was asleep at the wheel in grade school because I didn't learn a thing about geography until I was an adult and hung a map on my wall.

Jess August 17, 2011 at 6:43 PM

I love having maps all over my classroom. And that tattoo is amazing, but I would be scared of how long it must have taken!!!

Corinna August 17, 2011 at 7:23 PM

I love them all! I'm a fan of using them as art as well. Good convo starter for sure:)

Bud and Leo August 17, 2011 at 8:39 PM

I'm totally with you on loving maps! I think they are amazing! I love that 3rd pic- my hubby travels to Europe a lot for work so I really want to make a card out of that pic (and replace the dots with hearts) and sneak it in his suitcase! :)

Beautiful images! I wouldn't have thought to decorate with a map but they look lovely!

Michelle August 17, 2011 at 9:30 PM

We have a gigantic world map for a while. It really does make you ponder when you study it!

alli/hooray August 17, 2011 at 11:09 PM

I'd love a big world map like you! my husband is obsessed with geography and I have a serious thing for maps too - posters, globes, you name it.

Stephanie August 17, 2011 at 11:31 PM

I love these! The boyfriend really wants a giant map of Italy to put in our bedroom, but I'm liking these US maps a lot more!

I can't wait to see what you do with your maps. when I move, I find it easiest to completely unpack one room at a time. start with the kitchen then the bedroom and bathroom, living room, etc, etc. once you are done unpacking you will have a good idea of any shelving/storage you may need for each room along with furniture and along the way you may become inspired about the decor and style of your home. You'll get there! xo K

So many neat maps. I love this. I'm sure there will be great ways to incorporate maps into your home

So happy you're settling in nicely. And I can't thank you enough for your sweet comments about my little one's school situation.

I love maps and if I had a boy, I love the idea of a wall covered completely in a map. I can get lost in them.

You know, I can understand your feelings about decorating. I went through that a year ago. But I really love the idea of VERY slowly fixing up you nest, as you gather things you love instead of quickly buying things you may not love just to have it looked done. It will all come together in time...so in the meantime, try to enjoy the process. xo

I adore maps. I think there are so many things you can do with them (like the map on the glass of the door -- love that), and I really like the idea of marking off the places you've been in some special way.
